Digital Media Player -Understanding the Difference between Codec and Torrents

by on Nov.30, 2009, under Uncategorized

Most  of the   New Digital Media  Player will  come with a Bittorrent client , A BitTorrent client is a computer program that manages downloads and uploads using the BitTorrent protocol.

A (  .torrent file )  is NOT a video format. You need to open the( .torrent)  file in a bittorrent client such as µtorrent , BitTornado or  Azureus and  many others . The client will then download the video file (most commonly .avi ) which you can then watch on your computer ,such  avi  file  can  be transfer then stored on the Media Player directly  for  your selection to watch at anytime

Nowadays , video codec and formats  are  really  the first major  concern of AV   Specialist     and  those  “ torrent –Non-so-legal movie ”  down-loaders   . The Video technology  has evolves  over  the  years  , and  Now the  same file size that  allows us to watch Mediocre quality  AVI s   has  changed and  allows  us to store High Definition 1080i  and  this   are possible  due  to the availability of new codec  software

The concept of codec

A non-compressed video image occupies a big file  space , and to stream over  the internet  it  will require  to have a frequency of at least 25 or 30 images per second, which produces a data flow  that is more than 1.5 GB per minute. Definitely  this type of flow of stream data  is Not compatible with the storage spaces of personal computers. Thus, in order to overcome this difficulty, it is possible to resort to algorithms that allow the data flows to be  reduced by compressing/decompressing the video data. These algorithms are called CODEC  ( for Compression / Decompression).
All codec (a contraction of code/decode which stand  for compression-decompression ) is a software module that contains algorithms used by encoding or playback software to encode or decode video or audio information

 To facilitate the  easier transfer  of Video files ,  Codec  are develop  into various  format ,  and  these are indentified   and put into Video containers format in order for user to differentiate  between  the various  type of video files , the more popular  includes
 AVI ,  MPEG/MPEG-4 , MKV, RM/RMV ,MOV, WMV ,etc  .

There  is great comparison list  of these container format and their  respective restriction ,  and  you  can   access to Wikipedia  for an elaborate  list of the different type  of codec and their features. All such different  containers provide support for different audio  and  video compression

Now  in simpler terms  ; to play any Digital video file or media   , you will require ;

-A Media player (or the software) and  the necessary  codec.

We are all familiar with media player but the term that need some  attention is the  word  : “codec “. In simple terms codec is like the key and your video file is like the lock, so you need the right  key or the codec to actually view( unlock )  the file that was used to encode the file.

This situation  may causes problems to some  users if they don’t have the proper codec on their system.,  and  may expect  all Media  can be played  without a Pre-conversion to the format accepted by the player

So, in order to play a video file, your setup has to be able to handle both the actual video codec and the container.

Which  is  also why when you sometime play an AVI file and Windows Media Player does not seem to display  the video  even though it totally played  and  the container  seems was no problem, but in actual fact  it didn’t have the right codec

There  are  many  codec packs around ,eg. Vista / XP Codec Pack is one of the most completed codec packs which helps you to play all major audio and video formats.

Most  Digital Player unit now comes along and  support  most  type of  Video and Audio codec ….Formats supported for playback include WMV9, WMV-HD, DIVX, XVid, HDV, MKV, H.264, VOB (DVD layouts), ISO, MP3, WMA, FLAC, WavPack, PCM, DTS, and many more.—- have a peace of Mind  and ENJOY!!!!!!
